In Chapter 5 Maria is amazed by the new snowfall outside of her window. She "couldn't tear herself away from her bedroom window...the city seemed to be wrapped in silence...she didn't want to do anything to disturb the wonderful, newly fallen snow." She is made happy by this beautiful site. But by the end of the day, Maria gets on the bus and looks out the window "she saw that the morning's bright, clean snow had been shoveled and trampled, and was now covered with soot and grime." How is Maria like the snow? How did she start the day like the snow and end the day like the snow? What happened to her at school to cause this change?
