Week 4 Discussion Question

In the last few chapters Maria has been comparing herself and her life to the book she is reading Charlotte's Web. It says on page 42 " Maria Isabel felt the only difference was that they characters in books always seemed to find answers to their problems, while she couldn't figure out what to do about her own." What solution does Maria eventually come up with to solve her problem? It then says, "Maria Isabel felt that she was caught in a sticky, troublesome spider's web of her own, and the more she tried to break loose, the more trapped she became." What does Maria mean by this, what 'web' does she feel can't break loose from? Do you think this book helps her to deal with her problems, why or why not? (There are 3 total questions here, don't forget to answer and explain them all).

Week 3 Discussion Question

In Chapter 5 Maria is amazed by the new snowfall outside of her window. She "couldn't tear herself away from her bedroom window...the city seemed to be wrapped in silence...she didn't want to do anything to disturb the wonderful, newly fallen snow." She is made happy by this beautiful site. But by the end of the day, Maria gets on the bus and looks out the window "she saw that the morning's bright, clean snow had been shoveled and trampled, and was now covered with soot and grime." How is Maria like the snow? How did she start the day like the snow and end the day like the snow? What happened to her at school to cause this change? Make sure to really explain your thinking and use examples to support your ideas.

Week 2 Discussion Question

Come up with three character traits that you think best describe Maria Isabel from what we have read so far. Make sure to explain why you picked each trait and give an example from the story to support it. An example would be: I think Maria is brave because she has had to move many times and leave everything she knows behind. She is brave because she still tries to learn in school and make new friends even though she doesn't speak/understand English well and doesn't remember her new name 'Mary'. (You cannot use this example in your answer).

Maria is already worried about going to a new school. When she arrives her new teacher tells her "We already have two Marias in this class. Why don't we call you Mary instead?" Why is this frustrating for Maria? Why is her name so important to her?
