Week 4 Discussion Question

In the last few chapters Maria has been comparing herself and her life to the book she is reading Charlotte's Web. It says on page 42 " Maria Isabel felt the only difference was that they characters in books always seemed to find answers to their problems, while she couldn't figure out what to do about her own." What solution does Maria eventually come up with to solve her problem? It then says, "Maria Isabel felt that she was caught in a sticky, troublesome spider's web of her own, and the more she tried to break loose, the more trapped she became." What does Maria mean by this, what 'web' does she feel can't break loose from? Do you think this book helps her to deal with her problems, why or why not? (There are 3 total questions here, don't forget to answer and explain them all).

Make sure to write in complete sentences and use details from the story to support your answers. Type this in your 'blogging doc' first so you can make corrections if necessary. Make sure to edit and revise your answer before you post it.

  1. The way that Maria solvers her problem of her teacher calling her Mary instead of Maria is by on her wish paper that she wrote that her greatest wish was to be called Maria Isabel. The web that Maria is stuck in the web of not getting to tell her teacher what she thinks but she thinks that the teacher may get mad. I think the book doesn't help with her problems because it gives her the idea that everything is so easy in a book which it is, but it make Maria feel even worse about herself because it isn't that way in real life.

  2. The way Maria fixes her problem is by writing how she feels about being called Mary she said that she would rather be called Maria then Mary and that is what her wish is.The web Maria is stuck in is not telling her teacher how she feels about being called Mary because she thinks that if she tells the teacher might get mad at Maria. But it makes Maria feel worse because that is not Maria`s name

  3. Maria decides to write her teacher a paper that she wants to be called Maria Isabel. She is trapped in a web of bad luck. For example She did not get to be in the play. This book is not helping her because it is making her think bad things.

  4. She solves her problem while comparing herself with the book Charlotte's Web so what Wilber does she basically does. Maria feels that she can break through her web in school so she can tell the teacher that I don’t like to be called Mary Lopaz. I think the book does help her because it helps her figure out her problems.
